Urbanisation & Its Impact; By Sandeep Biswas

URBANISATION AND ITS IMPACT.

I want to talk about the present scenario of rural India with context to urban India.

It is very complicated to understand the relation between these two societies of our country. Both are fully dependent on each other, but if we go in further detail we can understand that urban society is more dependent on rural society. Most of the resources are produced and manufactured by rural India. If we go in further detail, it is 30-70 % ratio, that is 70% of resources are consumed by 30% of urban society and hardly 30% of resources by 70% of rural society.

Which simply explains that, urban society is having good life style and more resources than rural society? Now the thing which made me to think about this is, how do they behave, live and consume resources in rural society, what is their life style? Why are they still in village? And not moving to city for better life style, what is culture for them? How do they react to situation? What is there profession? How happy are they with simple life style? And there are so many questions…..

I would like to share my understanding and observation on these issues; I think their life style is very influenced by the urban life style. They want to do same things which are very usual in urban society.

The present generation of rural India is very understandable, they are questioning on various issues, and they want to understand the reason behind everything. But still they are bounded to their social rules and cultural beliefs. Most of them actually understand the issues and wrong things which are going on in their society and culture.

And if we look into the detail of this generation, only educated youngsters are capable of asking and understanding their own problems and issues.

I strongly believe that villages should remain as villages and we should not mix-up rural and urban culture and life style together. At the same time we should also consider about their growth and life style. There should be an equilibrium state in their growth process with their belief, culture and heritage.

This growth is very important and the need of growth is to upgrade their life style, their understanding and education of the upcoming generation, to give them a chance to stay here and grow, rather than going to urban society, because most of the rural communities and families are still doing same work and continuing same profession of their ancestors without thinking the future of their children or without incorporating new techniques. They just blindly believe in whatever the society has made them to believe. This process of growth should not be a brainwash; it should be in a proper manner to incorporate their past along with their present, for a better future, for their children to continue the same profession with more superiority and knowledge.

Very few rural families and communities have strong belief in their work, which they are doing from many decades. They actually understand the meaning and value of their art and work. And they strongly want to maintain their profession alive, with the same knowledge of their ancestors.

Now, the biggest question which makes me think is why do we have almost 70% of population in rural India? Why are they not moving to urban India, for better life style? Why…..?

Do they really want to live in village and continue the profession of their ancestors? The answer is actually not. Only very few are dedicated towards their ancestor’s profession and their family business. For most of them it is just that, they can’t go out of the village because of their education or lack of knowledge, in other field of work. I think almost everyone wants to live in urban society with good life style and facilities.

One of the reasons is educational problem for children. Villages and nearby towns doesn’t have good colleges and schools, even if they have facilities, they don’t have teachers. And even for farming they need good knowledge of agriculture and there are very few institutions for that.

But because of difference in value of money in both the society, it becomes very hard to earn in rural society and move out to urban society or start a new life in urban area. Aim of this discussion is to explain the need of villagers and how are they reacting with these situations.

For example- no one wants to live in a house which is made by traditional and vernacular techniques. And if they are living, it is mostly because of their financial condition and not because of their belief in these techniques.

After talking to few villagers, I came to a conclusion that, they simply want to follow techniques which are in use, in urban areas. They all want to move in concrete houses.

Now days, for present generation, even names are very influenced by urban society’s names, like Nikhil, lucky, kashmira and so on.

There are villages which are considered prosperous and rich, because every family has few members in cities to work and support their family economy.

It is very complicated to comment and understand, what is appropriate way for their better growth and how should they start a new life for a new generation. Till which extent should they get influenced by fancy things and how should they understand to incorporate, alternative ways of using resources and to improve their lifestyle……?
